book

Finished How to do a great job … And Go Home On Time. Not a fantastic book, but a very enjoyable read, with some really nice ideas to pick out. No road to Damascus moments - much of what the book eschews is stuff I already knew, some of it I started pushing to my management last quarter of 2006. A portion of it may be wasted on folks here, but if I can take only one thing from the book, it’s this:

“Being addicted to work is an ‘erroneous zone.’ … It’s particularly about approval-seeking and guilt. It’s about seeing yourself as a victim rather than taking control of your life.”

I’ll be flicking through this one again soon, with a highlighter and a pencil, turning it from a book into a useable resource. Recommended, but not the best self-help book ever.

The choice now is, having read the book, and recognised things I already knew, do I put the suggested remedies into practice? I’ve already started. Work is better than it has been in a long time - I’m more productive, and the finishing time is between 5:00 and 5:15. It’s very early days yet, but maybe it’s working.
