Originally written in December, just found down the back of the sofa. Here, for your perusal…

One of the newer features of the iTunes / iPod software (alright, it was probably added in 2004, or something, but I’ve just got around to upgrading, so it’s new to me) is the ability, at the push of a button, to import CD cover art for all the albums you have in your iTunes library.

The forgotten

Me: What are you doing?

D: (clicking the remote unlock on the car key fob) I’m unlocking the car doors.

Me: D, you’re already in the car. You’re sitting in the driver’s seat. (Concerned) Are you OK? Not stressed over Christmas?

D: Stressed? I’m Fine. Why would you think I’m stressed? I’m perfectly fine. What?

Me: Well, it’s just that, when people’re stressed, they start forgetting things. Usually the most obvious things. Like, “I’ve already unlocked the car and am sitting in it.”

D: (Glare. Start ignition. end. Of. Conversation).

We’re opening Pressies right about now. Tearing off the wrapping and fondling our new treasures, smiling our thanks and appreciation and love at each other. We’ve got a full house: The In-Laws, the godkids, and The Queen of One-Legged Interpretive Dancing. My parents, my bro and my sis-in-law are back in Ireland, enjoying the first Noel in Sweetwater, and a part of me is with them.

But for now, whilst we check out the presents, here’s my list of my top twelve (Why 12? because 13 seemed unlucky) acquisitions this year. I’m a guy: We acquire things; we collect; we horde. And you know what? I take great pride in the fact that the things - the myriad objects that I fill my house with - are irrelevant. People count. Things don’t. Always been that way. Always will be.
